and I want to work very hard with them on changing the negative image some people have," he said. "We've got a lot of great organizations that are already working hard on changing the narrative. Locally, he plans to use his year as PEDCO chair to reach out to various civic groups and local schools to talk about the problem in hopes of devising a strategy to further improve Pueblo's image, he said. He credits Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers and others for their positive comments about Pueblo but, he said, the image problem won't go away entirely in the Springs or Northern Colorado without a sustained effort by Pueblo itself. Its existing Colorado Springs bank is well-received but many in the Springs still carry misguided impressions of Pueblo, Trainor said. The bank operates seven branches in Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Canon City, Lamar and Wiley and plans to open a second Colorado Springs branch. Trainor is in a good position to help drive the message given Legacy Bank's growing reach. "I think we've all had conversations with people in the Springs or Denver and they don't know the real Pueblo. "I get a little bit tired of people saying Pueblo has a high crime rate and bad schools and they don't know the facts," Trainor said afterward. He even suggested a slogan for such a campaign: "Make Pueblo Great Again." Trainor last week used his first speech before PEDCO members to say that one of the best ways for Pueblo to improve its image is for the community to aggressively challenge its detractors.īorrowing a few pages from President Donald Trump's playbook on economic development and messaging, Trainor didn't get into politics or use the term "fake news' but he did urge the community to stand up for itself. That's what Pueblo's detractors are peddling, according to Andrew Trainor, the regional president of Pueblo-based Legacy Bank and newly installed 2018 chair of the Pueblo Economic Development Corp.
